The Basic Food Groups

It is important to note that the food we consume daily plays a great role in keeping us healthy throughout our life. The doctors also stress on the need of incorporating healthy and nutritional foods in our daily diet including fresh fruits, milk and vegetables. The Basic Food Groups can be categorized into eight groups. Each food group is a rich source of nutrients and should be ideally included in our diet. The basic food groups include cereals, pulses, nuts and oilseeds, tubers and roots, green vegetables, dried and fresh fruits, sugars and fats, milk and milk products, fowl, flesh, fish and eggs. The Basic Food Groups also play a significant role in boosting our immunity and protects our body from different diseases.
Cereals like Ragi, Bajra, Jowar, Wheat and Rice are rich in carbohydrates and are the chief source of energy. Pulses like dal are rich in proteins, Vitamin B, and Vitamin C. Tubers and Roots like yams, raddish, sweet potatoes and potatoes are rich source of carbohydrates. Carrots are very rich in Vitamin A. The green leafy vegetables are also very rich in minerals and vitamins.



It is very important to include dried and fresh fruits in our diet. Dried fruits like dates, figs, apricots and raisins are rich source of minerals and sugars. Fresh fruits including papaya and mango are extremely rich in carotenes. Fats and sugars, which are present in cooking oils, honey, sugar and milk provide us with energy. Meat and fishes are excellent sources of Vitamin B Complex and proteins. The Basic Food Groups should be made an essential part of our diet.
