Coffee-History

Before we embark on the varied aspects of Coffee, let’s delve into the historical aspects of this particular Indian Beverage. Historical facts indicate that, the flourishing trade activities trade between Venice and the Muslims of North Africa, Egypt, and the Middle East led to the exchange of many African goods, including coffee. The then African merchants introduced coffee to the wealthy estates in Venice, thus, coffee became more widely accepted after the church proclamation made by Pope Clement VIII in 1600. In keeping with its popularity as a favorite drink, the first European coffee house was opened in Italy in 1645.

However, the Dutch were the first to import it on large scale, though the coffee plantations were widely grown in Java and Ceylon. The initial efforts made by the then British East India Company, coffee became popular in England and was finally introduced in France, Austria and Poland in the subsequent years of 1657.

Coffee-Flavour

What makes Indian Coffee so special is its unique flavor. South Indian Coffee, or ‘kaapi’ as its known in the local dialect is actually made of sweet milky coffee made from dark roasted coffee beans and chicory which is especially popular in the southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The most commonly used coffee beans are Peaberry Arabica, Malabar and Robusta which is widely grown in the hills of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

It is proved that if coffee is consumed in substantial quantity then the risk of developing colon cancer is less. The antioxidants present in the coffee aids in checking heart disease and also regulates the process of aging.

The Availability of Indian Coffee further received a boost with growth of retail coffee giants known as ‘Café Coffee Day’ which has its outlets in different cities across India. Thus, coffee has its own share of popularity.
