North Indian Style Salad

North Indian Style Salad

Salad is an important part of the Indian food habit and is a common side dish with every main course meal you take. The preferences and ways of preparing salads differs from region to region in India. North Indian Style Salad is easy to prepare and serve as a delicious side dish. Since the vegetables used in preparing this kind of salad remain almost raw, salad is highly nutritious. Usually seasonal vegetables and fruits are used in making salads.
Ingredients required to prepare North Indian Style Salad are

  • Tomatoes diced
  • Cucumbers peeled and finely diced
  • Onions finely diced
  • Green chillies finely chopped
  • A sprig of coriander leaves
  • A teaspoon of sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • Lime juice
  • Finely ground and roasted cumin seeds

  • Method of Preparation:

    Put the diced tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and green chillies in a bowl. Sprinkle sugar, salt and finely grounded roasted cumin seeds. Squeeze lime juice and mix them well. It is best to preserve and serve them room temperature.

    North Indian Style Salad also include Chaat which is prepared with fruit. It is prepared at home as well as served in the sidewalk stands. This salad is usually taken to keep our body cool in the sweltering heat of summer.



    Ingredients required to prepare this chaat are

    Cubes of all seasonal fruits like banana, oranges, apple, pear, nectarine, plums, guava, mango, pitted cherries, pineapple, kiwi, seedless grapes.
  • fresh lemon juice
  • cayenne
  • powdered roasted cumin seeds
  • paprika
  • a pinch of salt
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • a teaspoon of mint
  • a teaspoon of powdered ginger

    Method of Preparation:

    Put all the fruit cubes in a large bowl. Squeeze lemon juice in it. Mix salt, paprika, powder of cumin seeds, ginger powder and mint in a separate bowl. Add the mixture of the spices to the fruit bowl. Mix them well. Preserve them in the refrigerator and serve them chilled. It would help you to beat the summer heat. You can also mix yoghurt to the fruit bowl if you wish to make it tastier. Youghurt also helps you keep tour body cool. This preparation serves as an excellent side dish with meals and as a mineral salt supplement, lost by sweating in summer.
