South Indian Style Salad

Inclusion of salad in your meals is the tasty way to add the essential minerals and nutrients with your daily diet. Salad is usually prepared with raw fruits and vegetables and is occasionally served with dressing or sauce. In India salad forms an essential accompaniments with the meals. Indian Salads are prepared in different ways in different parts of the country. The preparation of South Indian Style Salad varies greatly from North Indian Style Salad.

For preparing South Indian Style Salad, you require

  • a carrot peeled and cut into thin strips
  • a cucumber, peeled and cubed
  • a tomato diced
  • a green chili finely chopped
  • a sprig of cilantro or coriander leaves finely chopped
  • a pinch of salt and pepper to taste
  • lemon for extracting juice

  • For South Indian Style Salad dressing you require

  • 2 teaspoons of oil
  • a teaspoon of brown mustard seed
  • a teaspoon of black gram dal
  • half of a red chili
  • a few curry leaves



    Method of preparation

    Add the pieces of carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, green chilly pieces, cilantro, pepper and lemon juice in bowl. Mix them together. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, black gram dal, half of red chili, asafoetida and a few curry leaves in heated oil. As the mustard seeds starts spluttering, add the mixture to the vegetables. Squeeze lemon in the mixture and mix them. This preparation is at its best if served at room temperature. Make sure that the fruits and vegetables used in the salad is fresh.
