Chole Bahture

Chole Bahture

Chole Bhature is believed to have originated in the state of Punjab in North India and is the favorite of young and old alike. The dish comprises a preparation of chole (chick peas) which is served with fried bread called bhature. It is also called as the Channa Masala or Chole Masala. Irrespective of its place of origin, Chole Bhature is equally popular in all parts of India. Apart from Indian homes, you will find this Indian Snacks being served at the expensive restaurants as well as by the local vendors. The dish is slowly gaining popularity among the foreigners too.

A common item for breakfast in the Indian cities, Chole Bhature can be taken while you are sipping lassi. Salad or simply onions as well as pickles go well with this dish. Easy to prepare, the dish is of great nutritional value and of unmatched taste. It is taken as light refreshments in evenings and afternoons too.

Essential ingredients required for making Chole Bhature are

  • soaked kabuli chana
  • garam masala
  • garlic paste
  • special chili powder
  • traditional aam chur
  • ginger paste
  • germinated coriander seeds
  • Finely chopped cilantro
  • Finely chopped onions.



    Bhature: To prepare for four, knead 500gms of maida into a dough. While kneading mix with with 125liters of oil, 200gms of yogurt and 25gms of baking powder. After the dough is prepared, make small balls and roll it in the shape of puri but made it a little thicker. Fry it in deep oil.

    Chole: Soak 250 grams of chole and leave it overnight before boiling it in the next morning. Pour oil in pan and heat it. Put the bay leaves and garam masala in the heated oil followed by finely chopped onions. Fry it till it becomes brown before adding garlic paste, ginger paste, germinated coriander seeds and chili powder and keep on frying. Add soaked chana and add salt and water and saute till the the gravy thickens.

    Serve it hot with salad and pickles.
